Frequently asked questions

How is Elterngeld calculated?

It replaces 65 to 100 % of your net income before birth. The rate is 67 % for net income around 1.000 to 1.200 €, higher for lower incomes and 65 % for higher ones. Basiselterngeld is at least 300 € and at most 1.800 € per month.

What is the difference between Basiselterngeld and ElterngeldPlus?

ElterngeldPlus pays roughly half the monthly amount but for twice as long, which suits parents who work part-time while receiving it. One Basis month equals two Plus months.

What are the sibling and multiple-birth bonuses?

The sibling bonus adds 10 % (at least 75 €) when you have a young child in the household. For twins, triplets and so on you receive 300 € extra per additional baby.

Is there an income limit?

Yes. For births from 1 April 2025, parents with a taxable income above 175.000 € in the year before the birth receive no Elterngeld.

About this tool

Elterngeld is the German parental allowance that replaces part of your income while you care for a newborn. This calculator estimates the monthly amount from the net income you earned before the birth, plus the sibling bonus and multiple-birth bonus where they apply.

It covers both Basiselterngeld and ElterngeldPlus and accounts for part-time income during the payment period as well as the 175.000 € income cap. Treat the result as a guide; the official Elterngeldstelle makes the binding calculation.
