Frequently asked questions
The transitievergoeding is the statutory severance payment a Dutch employer owes when it ends or does not renew an employment contract on its initiative. It is meant to soften the transition to new work and applies from the first working day.
The payment is one third of a gross monthly salary for each full year of service, pro-rated for the remaining part of a year down to the day. For example, ten years at 3,000 EUR per month gives 10 times one third of 3,000, which is 10,000 EUR.
Yes. In 2026 the transitievergoeding is capped at 102,000 EUR gross. If your gross annual salary is higher than that, the cap equals one full annual salary instead, so high earners are limited to one year of pay.
It is generally not owed if you resign yourself, if the dismissal is due to serious culpable conduct on your part, or if you have reached the state pension (AOW) age. Special rules can apply, so check your situation.
No. This is an estimate. Your exact base salary, structural allowances, and individual circumstances affect the figure, and a settlement or court ruling can differ. This is not legal advice.
